World Cup leader in advantage-managing mode

Vladimir Vasiliev starts the Baja Portalegre 500, last round of the 2014 FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies, leading the classification. The Russian has a 20-point advantage over Nasser Al-Attiyah and is betting on that cushion to manage the race.
Driving a Mini All4 Racing, he knows his rival will be aiming to win. However, since he just needs to finish on the top 4 to be crowned World Champion, he is not particularly set on a victory at the event. “We want to get to the end and to be close to Nasser, so we ensure the title. That’s our goal,” said the Russian.
Vasiliev might be betting on controlling the situation from behind, but he knows he will face some tough competition: “There are very good Portuguese drivers and finishing is not enough. We have to be fast and avoid problems,” he explained.
The World Cup leader also praised the Portuguese event: “The organisation is excellent and the support from the crowd is fantastic. We are grateful for the work done at the event, and we must also thank the fans for their huge support.”
